Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
We have created a Social Emotional Learning Curriculum aimed to increase the components of SEL while promoting cognitive and behavioral change through a combination of Mind, Body, and Earth-based practices.
We offer consulting services to dig into existing social emotional and mental well-being programming to identify gaps and offer comprehensive solutions.
Our Approach to SEL
-
MIND
We focus on mind-based approaches that decrease anxiety, improve focus, increase overall well-being, and teach sustainable tools. We focus on key components like mindfulness, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and emotion regulation.
-
BODY
By pairing our Mind based work with Somatic (body) based practices, we can better understand our emotional experiences and how to move through them. By understanding how our emotions impact our bodies and what physiological symptoms can arise, we can deepen our understanding and reach for more holistic tools for healing.
-
EARTH
By understanding our inherent connection to nature and engaging directly with plants and animals through herbal educaiton, we can not only benefit from natures gifts in the form of workshops on handcrafted herbal and medicinal products like teas, body butters, and face mists, but also understand how to better treat the planet to improve environmental conditions. Any products we make together will be gifted to the students and then sold to the public to help this program continue.
SEL Consulting
If you're dissatisfied with your current social emotional learning curriculum, or you'd like it to be more robust, we can take a look at it and give you a free rundown of suggestions and provide programming and assist in making strategic decisions to fill any gaps.
Peaceful Pathways Wellness Gardens: A School-Based SEL Garden
This garden project combines the joys of school-based gardens, that have been proven to increase overall physiological health and well-being , increase resilience, and decrease stress and anxiety, with the well-researched benefits of Social Emotional Learning to create a unique program that offers environmental education, reduces impacts of climate change, and increases overall well-being for school communities and beyond.
Combining Mind, Body, & Earth with Gardening

Mind (Cognitive)
We use techniques like mindfulness from cognitive, dialectical behavioral therapy, and social emotional learning to help students change the way they think and feel. By integrating the benefits of gardening, herbal education, and tools from CBT, DBT, and SEL, we provide a unique approach that is both natural, sustainable, and accessible.

Body (Somatic)
Our feelings, experiences, and memories are stored in our bodies. As we work on changing the old stories that hold us back, it's super important to notice where those feelings show up physically. We integrate somatic work alongside using nature-based tools, like essential oils and teas from the garden, to increase body awareness and overall self-awareness which has been shown to reduce feelings of stress and increase overall happiness and well-being.

Earth (Herbalism & Nature)
The Garden is the centerpiece of our work. If you don't already have a garden bed, we'll install one! If you do, we will create a Deep Roots Wellness garden section of your garden that includes native, perennial medicinal herbs and plants. We will build the beds together, plant together, host mindfulness workshops in the garden, host educational workshops where we harvest and make products, and more. Nature-based therapies have been shown to increase both mental and physical well-being.
Well Researched Benefits
Reduction in Anxiety, Depression, and Stress
Both gardening and SEL have been proven to reduce feelings of anxiety and stress. Gardening reduces stress by introducing physical work that gives the brain a break, and SEL reduces stress by helping participants cultivate invaluable skills around self-awareness and self-management.
Improvement in School
Studies are showing that gardening programs in schools are leading to increases in test scores amongst school populations. SEL programs reduce disruptive behaviors through emotional education while fostering competencies that lead to better productivity and responsibility.
Improved Social Relationships
Studies have shown that school gardens improve overall peer to peer relationships by fostering a sense of community connection. SEL improves peer relationships by increasing interpersonal effectiveness, social awareness, and connectedness.
And so much more…
Gardening and SEL have been proven to show great success on their own. Combined, there is a beautiful symbiosis of approaches that serves the holistic child.
